ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS

Regular school attendance is required of all pupils. Absences cause gaps in a pupil's learning which can seriously affect his/her school progress.

The school recognizes that there are some absences which are unavoidable and urge that sick children remain at home. However, we just as strongly urge that well children be sent to school. Parents are encouraged to assist in this regard.

Absences for medical or dental visitations and religious observance are valid absences but, are better planned, where possible, outside school hours. Students will only be released from school to attend a religious service when a parent or guardian has sent a note to the school in advance requesting the release. Parents are required to sign the child IN/OUT at the front desk in the school lobby.

Absences for: "visiting," "caring for baby," "work," "no shoes," "overslept," etc. are not appropriate under the rules of the Commissioner of Education and the State Education Law, and shall be considered illegal absences and/or lateness. School financial aid under New York State law is affected by unnecessary absences as support is based on the average daily attendance of pupils.

It is a policy of our School District that the school is to be notified on the morning of the day a child will be absent. If you don't notify the School Office, you will receive a call asking why your child is absent. This is intended to protect your child. Parents and the school should know where each child is during the day. The district attendance officer will assist in dealing with truancy. If your child will be out for more than one day the teachers will provide homework. The request must be made before 10:00 a.m. and the work may be picked up at the office at dismissal time. Homework requests and absence calls may be made before 8:00 a.m. by calling  457-2400, x4002.

When your child returns to school, a note stating the date(s) of illness and the reason for his/her absence, is required.

If your child becomes ill during the day and is to be sent home, you or your designated emergency number will be called. The child may then be picked up and signed out. Be sure to complete your emergency forms carefully and completely so that you, a responsible family member, or a designated friend may be reached.

Perfect attendance awards will be given. Excellent attendance is also recognized at the end of the year. Please note that only absences for which valid written excuses are received are deemed "legal".
