Our fifth grade is lucky to have the opportunity to visit Greenkill Outdoor Environmental Education Center for three days and two nights each spring. Greenkill is a YMCA camp in Port Jervis, New York. It is staffed by Naturalists, all college graduates, many of whom are certified teachers. While the students are at Greenkill, they participate in a variety of learning activities with their naturalist. Teachers act as chaperones and accompany the students throughout the day on their adventures, but Berea teachers do not do the teaching while at Greenkill. The cost of the Greenkill trip is almost $250 per student. To bring the cost down, the fifth grade organizes a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. The cost of the trip is then individualized per student depending on the extent to which the student participated in the fundraisers. Please make every attempt to participate to whatever small degree you can in all fundraisers.

The trip to Greenkill requires a mountain of paperwork and preparation. If you are the parent of a fifth grader, please watch for the following important milestones:

March 6 7:00 pm- Parent Information Meeting. We will hold a meeting here at Berea which is hosted by Greenkill staff. This is an opportunity for all questions and concerns to be answered.
due March 8- permission slip. Please make the decision of whether or not you will allow your child to join us.
due April 30 - Medical Form and payment. You will be asked to fill out an important medical form in order for your child to go on the trip. We strongly recommend that you have your family doctor fill out part of the form allowing your child to receive over the counter medicines such as calamine lotion or asprin.
June - Pick Up Note. Watch for one last decision to make. We return to school around 1:30 or 1:45 on our final day. We encourage you to come and pick your child up from school at that time.
April - What to Pack List. You will receive an equipment list detailing what you should pack. Also look for a letter with final information including Greenkill's address. Our students love receiving mail while at Greenkill. (Trouble printing the Packing List? Try a pdf. version by clicking here.)
