Our fifth grade is lucky to have the opportunity to visit Greenkill Outdoor Environmental Education Center for three days and two nights each spring. Greenkill is a YMCA camp in Port Jervis, New York. It is staffed by Naturalists, all college graduates, many of whom are certified teachers. While the students are at Greenkill, they participate in a variety of learning activities with their naturalist. Teachers act as chaperones and accompany the students throughout the day on their adventures, but Berea teachers do not do the teaching while at Greenkill. Please review the photo album pages by clicking on the toolbar at left for a detailed description of the daily Greenkill experience.
The cost of the Greenkill trip is almost $250 per student. To bring the cost down, the fifth grade organizes a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. The cost of the trip is then individualized per student depending on the extent to which the student participated in the fundraisers. Please make every attempt to participate to whatever small degree you can in all fundraisers.
The trip to Greenkill requires a mountain of paperwork and preparation. If you are the parent of a fifth grader, please watch for the following important milestones:
