     November 2019

Message from the Principal, Russell Burns:
The Valley Central School District began a new initiative this year involving
Social and Emotional Learning. According to the Collaborative for Academic,
Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), social and emotional learning (SEL) is
the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions,
set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and
maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Over twenty
teachers and support staff from around the district recently attended a two day
conference to learn to develop a SEL system within our schools. This initiative is
directly tied to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for our students
which will result in improved behavior, greater academic achievement, and
ultimately, happier kids. The students are the focal point of every initiative that we
have here in Valley Central. For more information on this district initiative you can
talk to your child’s guidance counselor or visit the CASEL website, casel.org.
Please reach out to the school with any questions or concerns and, as always, thank
you for your help and support.

    Guidance Department
The Guidance Department has been meeting with 6 grade students to make
introductions and complete interest inventories.  We are enjoying getting to know
    them!
On November 7th, the Guidance Department will be hosting a Career and College
Fair from 8-10:20 for the 8th graders.  The event is a day in which the students
begin to realize that the skills they are presently learning will help them to reach
their goals and prepare them for their future role as working adults.
The Community Service Club has just started meeting.  It’s a way for students to
be able to help in their community and in their school.  Any students interested can
    contact Guidance.

    6th Grade
The 6th Grade Teams are very excited about their upcoming trip on November
21st to The American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Students will
view many exhibits that connect to our Science and Social Studies Curricula. We
will be leaving regular time and will return at approx. 4 PM. Students will need a
ride waiting and will also need to bring a bagged lunch. We can't wait.
