The Class of 2020 missed so many moments of their Senior year that are usually taken for granted. When it was announced that their August 1, 2020 in-person graduation had to be virtual due to state restrictions regarding large gatherings, many of the class members reached out to Superintendent John Xanthis and asked if there was anyway they could hear their name announced in person and move the tassel on their graduation cap to the left like countless Valley Central graduates have done before them.
“While there have been so many new, and unique events that were created to celebrate these graduates, it broke my heart to hear them ask for something so simple, so I reached out to the high school administration team and asked them to make something happen for these kids.” Explained Superintendent Xanthis.
In a combined effort with the All Night Grad (ANG) Committee, we are happy to provide one more lasting memory for the Class of 2020. ANG originally planned for graduates to pick up their $55 checks and claim prizes on Thursday, July 30 and Monday, August 3. Students can still claim their checks and prizes on Monday. However, we have cancelled Thursday’s pick-up. Instead, we will be providing students an opportunity on Saturday, August 1 to walk across a staged area, have their names called by Mr. Hebbard and Mrs. Hernandez, receive their Commencement program and keepsake tickets and claim their prize money from ANG. Also, any students who have earned the Biliteracy Seal will receive them at this time.
If Class of 2020 seniors are interested in picking up and participating on Saturday, August 1, they must complete the following form by Wednesday, July 29 at noon. August 1 Participation Form
Once we have received your form, you will be provided with a time frame to arrive at school between 9AM-1PM on Saturday, August 1. Students will be expected to follow the assigned times given. It should be anticipated that there will be some wait time for participants.
Some guidelines that must be followed for Saturday participation:
- Graduates must come dressed in their cap and gown
- Due to restrictions, one car only per graduate
- The graduate cannot be driving as they will need to get out of their car to walk the stage.
- Parents/Guardians will be given an opportunity to take pictures of the Graduate on the stage from their cars and designated areas
- Students should maintain social distance; if you are feeling sick or have a fever you may not participate
- Cars will enter through the Middle School entrance and be directed to the MS parking lot
- Cars will filter through the middle lane of the HS/MS complex
- Graduates will be directed to get out of their car by staff
- Graduates will be able to sign the Senior board that is traditionally done at the ANG Party
We are excited to offer this one last moment in time for the Class of 2020. Please complete the form in order to participate and if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Carver at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Virtual 62nd Commencement will still broadcast on Saturday, August 1 at 6:00 PM.While the virtual ceremony will give the students the opportunity to hear the traditional speeches of the class president, valedictorian and salutatorian, there is something about letting the students stand on a stage and physically move their tassel to show that they are graduated.
“We have made so many things happen that I couldn’t have imagined during this pandemic from the delivery of lawn signs to every member of the Class of 2020 and the incredible Celebration Lane and family Graduate Photo Shoots. If they want that moment on the stage to stand and know that they have indeed graduated, we can make that happen too, for this extraordinary, historic class of VC graduates” said Xanthis.
Again, if you are unable to claim your items on Saturday, you can claim them on Monday, August 3 from 11:00AM – 3:00PM and don’t forget the ANG Facebook Live drawing of the prizes beginning at 5PM on July 30th.
