April 1, 2020
From John Xanthis, Superintendent
As you are aware, Governor Cuomo has extended school closures through April 14th. In addition, the Governor has ordered districts to provide remote instruction for students, meals for students, and childcare for essential workers every weekday between April 1, 2020 and April 14, 2020, even if the district is scheduled to be on spring break during that time.
In order to comply with the instructional piece of this mandate, Valley Central teachers will continue to provide meaningful learning/instructional activities throughout this time period and will be available to answer questions and provide feedback. In the event the Governor extends school closures past April 14th, Valley Central will begin a new on-line instructional plan on Wednesday, April 15th. More information about the new plan will follow, however it is important for you to know that secondary students should use this time up until April 14th to complete any missed assignments for the third quarter in order to improve their third quarter grade.
We will also continue to provide meals and offer a childcare plan for essential workers. Breakfast and Lunch are available Monday – Friday through April 3rd, and then Monday – Thursday (Thursday’s meal pack will also include Friday’s meal) through April 14th (drive-through or walk-up). The sites are:
9:45 am-10:15 am: Sleepy Hollow Trailer Park, Coldenham
10:30-12 Noon: ALC @ Maybrook, East Coldenham Elementary, Walden Elementary, VCMS
If you are an essential worker who needs childcare, please fill out this survey and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible.
While the governor has said he will reassess the situation at the end of the current closure period we do know looking forward, that according to the latest Governor’s executive order, that on Memorial Day weekend we can only be out of school on Monday, May 25th, as we must use the previously scheduled days to meet our 180 day requirement. We wanted to give you advance notice of this.
We are in uncharted territory and are doing our best to meet the mandates handed down to us by New York State, as we get them. This sometimes changes daily. We are committed to keeping you as best informed as we can. We are all in this together and we want you to know we are here to support you as best we can.
From: Ellen McGoldrick, District Clerk
A Special Meeting of the Board of Education is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 3, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. Due to an abundance of caution
with regard to the spread of COVID-19, and in accordance with Governor Cuomo’s March 12th Executive Order No. 202.1, which temporarily
suspended those sections of the Open Meetings Law requiring in-person access to public meetings, this special meeting of the Board of Education
of the Valley Central School District will be convened via teleconference call.
The public is cordially invited to listen to or observe the public business being discussed by the Board of Education by accessing the District’s
Facebook page where we will provide a live audio stream of the meeting, which will be recorded and later transcribed.”
The Board of Education Budget Work Session scheduled for April 2nd, has been canceled.
