Meet the Superintendent


    John Xanthis was appointed in August 2015 to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools for the Valley Central School District and served in that capacity for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years.  At the October 4, 2016 Board meeting, he was appointed as Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2017.

    John began his career in education in 1978 as a Social Studies teacher in the Valley Central High School.  Since then, he has held the positions of Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principal, Middle School Principal, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel, and Superintendent of Schools.  He retired as Superintendent of the Port Jervis City School District in 2013 after 10 years of service.  He then worked as Interim Assistant Principal in the Warwick Valley High School and Interim Principal in the Highland Falls/Fort Montgomery Intermediate School. 

    John’s extensive professional experience has afforded him comprehensive and critical knowledge of public education in Orange County and New York State. He is dedicated to building positive relationships with his colleagues to learn from them, as well as share ideas and resources to create an atmosphere of learning that supports student growth and success.

    John was born and raised in Newburgh. For the past 35 years he and his wife have lived in Goshen where they raised four children.
