On June 13, 2020 , Jonathan Jurgens, a Valley Central senior helped to realize the dream of adding a patio next to the East Coldenham Learning Garden as his Eagle Scout project. Our Learning Garden has provided a hands-on experience since 2017 for a wide range of learners that incorporates collaboration, community building and social-emotional development.
After months of planning for his project, the arrival of the Coronavirus threatened to close everything down, but Johnathan was not deterred. Having secured all the materials needed, he gathered his team of fellow scouts and planned his project based on the new Covid restrictions. VC grounds staff removed the sod in the area he had measured and a crew of scouts and their families and friends arrived (with their face masks on) to tackle the day-long job of laying down the patio. Now the E.C. Learning Garden has a wonderful new space to bring students for some of the many gardening activities and classes that will hopefully resume in the fall.
Johnathan’s determination during this pandemic should be a reminder of the strength of our youth to overcome whatever barriers may lie ahead. It is up to our community of teachers, parents and administrators to believe in that strength and provide the support and encouragement they need to help them realize their potential.
