During a special Valley Central Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the board unanimously voted to appoint current Interim Superintendent John Xanthis as Valley Central Superintendent of Schools. The board approved a resolution to enter into a three-year contract with Mr. Xanthis. Currently, Mr. Xanthis is on an interim contract, which will remain in effect until June 30, 2017. His three-year contract will then commence on July 1, 2017 and extend through June 30, 2020.
Mr. Xanthis began his career in education in 1978 as a Social Studies teacher in the Valley Central High School. Since then, he has held the positions of Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principal, Middle School Principal, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Superintendent of Schools. He retired as Superintendent of the Port Jervis City School District in 2013 after 10 years of service. Since then he has worked as an Interim Assistant Principal in the Warwick Valley High School, and in 2014, he served as Interim Principal in the Highland Falls/Fort Montgomery Intermediate School.
In August 2015, Mr. Xanthis was appointed to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools for the Valley Central School District for the 2015-16 school year and the board subsequently extended his interim contract to the 2016-17 school year, before appointing him as permanent superintendent in October 2016.
John’s extensive professional experience has afforded him comprehensive and critical knowledge of public education in Orange County and New York State. He is dedicated to building positive relationships with his colleagues to learn from them, as well as share ideas and resources to create an atmosphere of learning that supports student growth and success.
An Orange County native, Mr. Xanthis was born and raised in Newburgh. For the past 37 years, he and his wife have lived in Goshen where they raised four children.
“We are both blessed and fortunate to have such an experienced, dedicated administrator to lead our district,” Valley Central Board of Education President Sheila Schwartz said. “The genesis of Mr. Xanthis’ vast career in education began here in Valley Central in 1978, and it seems only fitting that he has returned to where he began. Valley Central has no bigger fan cheering our district on at the sidelines. We hope you are all are as happy as we are to have Mr. Xanthis remain here as part of our Valley Central Family.”
