Where's the Beef?
Where’s the Beef?
Beef from the NYS Beef Council took centerstage at the January 13, 2020 BOE meeting thanks to the VCMS Culinary Club.
The Culinary Club was just formed this year at Valley Central Middle School under the advisement of Home and Careers teachers, Melissa Toromanides and Lauren Ostner. The club which has over sixty members meets in groups of twenty (the advisor send out tickets to club members through Google Classroom, and the first twenty members to claim the tickets are the ones who are admitted that week) to learn new recipes and new techniques. Only eighth graders are able to take Home and Careers classes, so the club provides an opportunity for sixth and seventh grade students to get used to the Home and Careers kitchens before they take the class according to teacher, Lauren Ostner. Eighth grade students are also able to participate in the club as well.
The club received two grants from the NYS Beef Council. They learned all about the different cuts of beef and even how to custom grind them into ground beef, which they learned how to form into patties. The students created slider burgers with sauteed mushrooms and onions and homemade pickles, ketchup and mustard. They did a presentation on January 13, 2020 for the Board of Education and public audience and they served the entire Board of Education platters of sliders, along with baskets of sliders for the audience. The presentation was well received and the students earned much praise for their efforts.
Elizabeth Zefi, an eighth grade member of the club, said that she has learned new techniques like making a roux for macaroni and cheese and learned a new cookie recipe, Snickerdoodles.
Elizabeth said, “Ms. O. and Ms.T are awesome teachers, they give us so many different things to learn and do. I really enjoy the Culinary Club and look forward to attending meetings”.
