MacBeth- VCHS Shakespeare Club

The Valley Central High School Shakespeare Club was scheduled for a late October production of MACBETH. Since we were unable to stage a live performance, we are creating the play in FIVE RECORDED EPISODES using the combined technological assistance from Google Meet, Screencastify, iMovie, Facebook, and YouTube.

What you are about to see is the premiere of MACBETH EPISODE ONE, which will also be available via the district YouTube channel.  Each episode will run 15-20 minutes, and we will release new ones as they are completed.

Our deepest gratitude for your support.

Synopsis of EPISODE ONE:

Three Witches appear in the path of heroic army captains Macbeth and Banquo, who are on their way home from a great victory in battle. The Witches surprise Macbeth by calling him by name, even though they have never met, and hailing him “Thane of Glamis,” which is a title that he holds. But they also call him “Thane of Cawdor,” a title he does not hold. Most powerfully, they tell him that he will be King, which could not be farther from his mind. Before they vanish, they also tell Banquo that his children will be kings.

Moments later, the news is delivered to Macbeth that he has indeed been promoted to Thane of Cawdor as a reward for his heroism in battle, turning the witches’ second utterance into a prophecy. This infects Macbeth’s mind with the idea that their third utterance may also come true, and that he is meant to be king.

Macbeth writes to his wife, Lady Macbeth, telling her the news. Concerned that he will not seize upon this opportunity to become king, she summons the forces of evil to assist her. When Macbeth arrives home, he tells her that the current King Duncan is on his way to honor him that night. Without hesitation, she insists they murder him, that night, to give Macbeth a clear path to be named king, just as the Witches promised.

In EPISODE TWO, Lady Macbeth gives the guards drugged wine so Macbeth can enter the King’s chamber and kill him. After performing this bloody deed, he regrets it almost immediately, but Lady Macbeth reassures him. She leaves the bloody daggers by the dead king just before Macduff, a nobleman, arrives. When Macduff discovers the murder, we pick up the action in EPISODE THREE…

In EPISODE THREE, the noblemen investigate who killed King Duncan. The King’s son Malcolm, fearful for his own safety, flees to England, which makes the other noblemen suspicious that he is guilty.

Meanwhile, Macbeth is crowned king, just as the witches foretold. Fearing that Banquo’s descendants will become kings according to the witches’ other prophecy, Macbeth hires murderers to kill him. At a royal banquet that evening, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost,  covered in blood, which brings us to EPISODE FOUR.

Episode Five- The Final Episode

After seeing Banquo’s ghost, Macbeth’s frenzied and incriminating remarks break up the feast and raise suspicions of his guilt.

Macbeth returns to the witches. They warn him to beware of Macduff. However, much to his comfort, they assure him that no man born of a woman can harm him. To make him feel even more invincible, they tell him he cannot be defeated until Birnam Wood, a medieval forest, comes to Dunsinane, the site of Macbeth’s castle.

Macbeth is greeted with the news that Macduff has fled to England. Taking this as a sign of betrayal, Macbeth orders the murder of Lady Macduff and her children. This savagely brutal act brings us to our final episode, EPISODE FIVE .
