The Valley Central School District proudly presents the Top 25 students of Valley Central High School’s Class of 2020. Among them are future doctors, scientists, teachers, physicists, zoologists, nurses, business leaders, teachers and engineers. They make us VC PROUD!
In order from one to twenty-five, they are:
Kimberly Black, Valedictorian
Kimberly Black will be attending Boston College majoring in Film Studies. She plans to pursue a career in cinematography. While in high school, Kimberly was President of her class both her Junior and Senior years. She was also active with the Volunteer Club and a member of the National Honor Society, serving as Treasurer for VC’s chapter. She was also a member of the English, Math, Science and Spanish Honor Societies. She is a dancer with the Hudson Valley Conservatory. Kimberly recognized the amazing teachers of Valley Central High School who care so deeply about their students, and her opportunity to form bonds with her friends that she feels will be lifelong.
Francesca DiBernardo, Salutatorian
Francesca “Franki” DiBernardo will be attending Michigan State University where she will major in zoology as she pursues her plans to become a veterinarian. Franki played soccer, volleyball, softball and basketball during high school. She was active with the Volunteer Club, and a member of the National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and the Art Honor Society. Franki stated that she would fondly remember the great times she had learning at Valley Central with her friends.
Katherine “Katie” Canavan will be attending Vassar College majoring in Physics and Math. Katie intends to eventually get her PhD in Physics and hopes to work in the fields of astrophysics or quantum mechanics as a professor/researcher. Katie was on the swim and track teams during high school. She was active with the Volunteer Club, served as a dean for the National Honor Society and Vice President of the English Honor Society. She was a member of the Jazz Band and member of the Music Honor Society. Katie was also a member of the Math Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Katie said that she appreciated the motivation that her classmates provided and the feeling of solidarity she has for the Class of 2020.
Erin-Rose Cooney will be attending Aldephi University where she will play on the basketball team and be majoring in Political Science. She will be pursuing a career in law enforcement. Erin was an outstanding player on the VC Basketball team and was named OCIAA Female Scholar/Athlete. She was a member of the Volunteer Club and For the Animals Club and also a member of National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, English Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Erin said she will cherish the memory of her friends and teachers at VCHS.
Sophie Steger will be attending SUNY Cortland where she will be running track and cross country while she majors in Adolescent Education in Math. Sophie intends to be a high school math teacher and hopes to be able to positively impact her students in the way she has been positively impacted by her VCHS teachers. Sophie was a member of the Volunteer Club, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, English Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Art Honor Society. Sophie is grateful for the wonderful memories she leaves VCHS with thanks to her coaches, teammates and friends.
Mya Smith will be attending SUNY Binghamton where she will be studying English and hopes to become either an English or History teacher. She aspires to help raise a generation of successful and productive members of society as Mya says, “like my teachers did for me”. At VCHS, Mya was active with the Volunteer Club and the Interact Club and played softball. She was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the English, Math, History, Science, and Spanish Honor societies. Mya said that she leaves VCHS with many fond memories of the many events, games and dances that she shared with her friends and is grateful for the teachers who have helped her become who she is today.
Amanda Paulus will be attending Marist College where she will be studying Mathematics education and she hopes to teach High School Math, maybe even at Valley Central. Amanda was on the tennis and softball teams and was a member of the Math team, and the National Honor Society as well as the English, Math, Social Studies and Science honor societies. Amanda said that she will remember all of her teachers, coaches and friends and will cherish her high school memories.
Mackenzie Dickman will be attending SUNY Cortland where she will be studying Early Childhood and Childhood Education. She intends to be an elementary teacher and hopes to someday work in her hometown. Mackenzie was a member of the Swimming/Diving team and served as captain of the team. She was also a member of the Golf team and a member of the Yearbook staff, as well as the Freshman Orientation team. She was the secretary for the Student Council, and a member of the National Honor Society. She belonged to the English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Spanish honor societies. Outside of school she was captain of the Viking Aquatic Club and Vice President of Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 43. Mackenzie said she will remember the teachers at VCHS for encouraging her to be do her best, and will carry with her the amazing memories of her friends.
Nailil Ramos will be attending Hofstra University where she will be studying Sociology and Creative Writing. She hopes to be an author someday, but is also interested in being a Survey Researcher and may also pursue acting. Nailil was a member of the Photography club and served as Secretary for the Cultural Diversity Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and English, Social Studies, Science and Spanish honor societies. Nailil said while she will always remember the friendships she will especially remember the Powder Puff game and Senior Week.
Haley Rothstein will be attending University of North Carolina Wilmington where she will study chemistry. She is interested in becoming and EMT and a high school chemistry teacher.
Haley was active with the Volunteer Club, the Freshman Orientation team, the Junior and Senior Class and was a member of National Honor Society as well as the English, Math and Science honor societies. Haley enjoyed her years at Valley Central, and especially like attending the football games.
Jonathan Jurgens will be attending Iowa State University where he will study Agricultural and Biological Engineering. Jonathan wants to use math and science to help the agricultural field.At VCHS, Jonathan ran Track and Cross Country and was named the OCIAA Male Scholar Athlete for VC. He was the member of the Math team and the New York State Math League and Science Olympiad. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Science and Social Studies honor societies. He has participated with St. Baldrick’s Foundation and is an active member of the Boy Scouts, Venture Crew and is currently completing his Eagle Project. Jonathan said he will remember how how hard his teachers made him work and the challenging courses he took, and is grateful that all that hard work helped him be accepted at the college the caliber of Iowa State University.
Ethan Amburg will be attending University of Connecticut where he will dual major in Engineering and Business. He would like a career in engineering management. At VCHS, Ethan was on the Indoor and Outdoor Track Team. He was a member of the Volunteer Club and is the treasurer of the National Honor Society. He is also a member of the English, Social Studies and Science honor societies, serving as treasurer of the Science Honor Society, as well. Ethan is grateful for the amazing peers and influential teachers who gave him an endless amount of support and encouragement and inspired him to be his best.
Stephanie Mardirossian will be attending Pennsylvania State University majoring in Biology and intends to eventually attend Medical School to become a doctor. Stephanie was part of the VCHS Science Research program. Stephanie is a member of the Math team, Volunteer Club and National Honor Society. She is also a member of the English, Math, Social Studies, Science, French and Spanish honor societies. She will remember all of her VCHS friends and teachers, especially her Spanish class with Mrs. Creter.
Brandon O’Brien will be attending the United States Naval Academy studying Aerospace Engineering. Brandon would like to pilot F-35 jets in the Marines and eventually become an astronaut. Brandon was member of the Track and Field team and participated in the JROTC program. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and the English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Spanish honor societies. Brandon enjoyed his years at VCHS and the bonds he made with friends and teammates and is missing the opportunity to say goodbye to them in person.
Erin Petersen will be majoring in science at Stony Brook University and plans to have a career as a lab analyst in Spanish speaking countries. Erin is a member of Art, English, Spanish and Social Studies honor societies. Erin appreciated her art classes with Mrs. Schneider and all her encouragement.
Connor Fitzgibbons will be attending Monmouth University where he will major in Accounting. Connor intends to become a Certified Public Accountant. Connor was on the football, basketball and baseball teams. He is a member of the Volunteer club, and the National Honor Society. He is also a member of the Math, English, Spanish and Science honor societies. Connor is grateful for his friends, coaches, teachers and his family who helped him along the way.
Thomas Briand will be attending SUNY Cortland majoring in Adolescent Education in French and Spanish and hopes to become a foreign language teacher and would like to teach at Valley Central with the teachers he has looked up to. Thomas is a member of the Volunteer Club and the Pep Band. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and the English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Music, French and Spanish honor societies. Thomas is grateful for the support and the encouragement he has been given by the staff and his classmates at Valley Central.
Tam Vu will be attending the University at Buffalo where she will major in Engineering and looks forward to working in the STEM field. Tam was a member of the Swimming Team and Spring Track and Field. She is a member of the Volunteer Club and Science Olympiad. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and the Art, English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Spanish honor societies. Tam will remember all the people at VCHS, her teachers and her friends who supported her and helped her to grow in the area of science.
Ajan Samuel will be attending SUNY New Paltz where he will major in Biology and plans to have a career in the medical profession. Ajan was a member of the Volunteer Club during high school and will miss his friends.
Jada Wesenberg will be attending College of St. Rose where she will major in Childhood Education with a History concentration and intends to minor in music and continue to play trumpet. Jada plans to be an Elementary teacher and would also like to write and illustrate children’s books. Jada was on the Tennis team and the Pep and Jazz Bands serving as President of the Jazz Band. She was a member of Revelation (Art and Literary magazine), Volunteer Club, Set Design Club, and VCTV. Jada is a member of the National Honor Society, Art, English (Treasurer), Social Studies (Treasurer), and Music honor societies. Jada will remember her music and art classes and all the special teachers who helped to get here to where she is today.
Mackenzie Zupko will be attending Mount Saint Mary College where she will be majoring in Biology. She would like to become a researcher in the area of infectious disease and work in a hospital. At VCHS, Mackenzie was a captain on the Swim team and Vice President of the Science Olympiad. Mackenzie was the secretary of the National Honor Society and a member of the English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Music honor societies. She was a captain of the Viking Aquatic Club, the stage manager of the Berea Drama Club, a volunteer at Little Britain Elementary School and a patrol leader of Troop 31 and President of Venture Crew 43.
“I will remember the teachers who supported me, my friends who made me laugh, and the clubs that filled my days.” Mackenzie said when asked what she will remember about Valley Central.
Katherine Geiselhart will be attending Oxford College at Emory University where she will major in Biology. She would like to enter the medical field and become a dermotologist. Katherine was a member of the Swim team, Science Olympiad, the Pep Band, Volunteer Club, National Honor Society, and the English, Social Studies, Science, Spanish and Music honor societies. Katherine said she will always remember her friends and her teachers.
Autumn Purcell will be attending Marist College where she will major in Business Administration and will enter the business field after college. Autumn was a Captain on the Swim Team, and a statistician for Boys’ Basketball. She was Senior and Junior Class President. Autumn performed in the cast of three musicals during high school. She served as a Student Government Association Representative on the Board of Education, co-editor of the yearbook and is a member of the National Honor Society. Autumn credits her experience at VCHS with helping her to break out of her shyness and become an enthusiastic participant in the community.
Alyse Gill Hill
Alyse Gill Hill will be attending Penn State University where she will be studying Nursing and plans to become an RN specializing in Labor and Delivery. Alyse has been part of the Medacheive Program at Touro College of Medicine during her junior and senior year. She was part of the Volleyball and Track teams and participated with the Pine Bush Volleyball club as well. Alyse is a member of the National Honor Society, and the English, Science and Social Studies honor societies. She was a dean on the Junior Council and senator on the Senior Council and a member of the Volunteer Club. Alyse will fondly remember her friends and teachers as she leaves Valley Central.
Rebekah Wilson will be attending Mount Saint Mary College majoring in Business and will be joining the Air National Guard when she graduates. She intends to find a career that will let her serve the greater good. Rebekah was a member of the Voxtones and the Pep Band. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and the English and Music honor societies. Rebekah appreciates how Valley Central helped her to grow as a person.
