The Valley Central High School Shakespeare Club was scheduled for a late October production of MACBETH. Since we were unable to stage a live performance, we are creating the play in FIVE RECORDED EPISODES using the combined technological assistance from Google Meet, Screencastify, iMovie, Facebook, and YouTube.
The premiere of MACBETH EPISODE ONE is happening on the District Facebook
page and will also be available via the district YouTube
channel. Each episode will run 15-20 minutes, and we will release new ones as they are completed.
As Shakespeare is often difficult to understand, below is a synopsis of EPISODE ONE.
Three Witches appear in the path of heroic army captains Macbeth and Banquo, who are on their way home from a great victory in battle. The Witches surprise Macbeth by calling him by name, even though they have never met, and hailing him “Thane of Glamis,” which is a title that he holds. But they also call him “Thane of Cawdor,” a title he does not hold. Most powerfully, they tell him that he will be King, which could not be farther from his mind. Before they vanish, they also tell Banquo that his children will be kings.
Moments later, the news is delivered to Macbeth that he has indeed been promoted to Thane of Cawdor as a reward for his heroism in battle, turning the witches’ second utterance into a prophecy. This infects Macbeth’s mind with the idea that their third utterance may also come true, and that he is meant to be king.
Macbeth writes to his wife, Lady Macbeth, telling her the news. Concerned that he will not seize upon this opportunity to become king, she summons the forces of evil to assist her. When Macbeth arrives home, he tells her that the current King Duncan is on his way to honor him that night. Without hesitation, she insists they murder him, that night, to give Macbeth a clear path to be named king, just as the Witches promised.
