0210- Goals for Instructional Program

In recognition that each person learns most effectively when placed in situations where achievement is both attainable and measurable, the Valley Central School District establishes these instructional goals:

  1. mastery of the basic skills of communication and reasoning essential to live a full and productive life;
  2. knowledge of the disciplines at a level required to participate in an ever more complex world;
  3. knowledge and appreciation of our culture and capacity for creativity, recreation and self-renewal;
  4. understanding of the processes of effective citizenship in order to participate in and contribute to the government of our society;
  5. knowledge of the natural environment and the relationship between one’s actions and the quality of that environment;
  6. occupational competence necessary to secure employment in the world students will face as adults, commensurate with ability and aspiration, and to perform work in a manner that is gratifying to the individual and to those served;
  7. ability to sustain lifetime learning in order to adapt to the new demands, opportunities, and values of a changing world;
  8. understanding of human relations — respect for and ability to relate to other people in our own and other nations — including those of different sexes, races, colors, national origins, religions, and other cultural heritages;
  9. ability to develop and maintain one’s mental, physical, and emotional health; and
  10. competence in the processes of developing values which are essential to individual dignity and a humane civilization.
