VCHS Youth in Government Team participated in the Steering Convention

On Friday, 21 November the VCHS Youth in Government Team participated in the Steering Convention where the Citizens and Peoples Parties held their primaries to select candidates in the county wide Mock Election. Four VC students were selected as their party’s candidate for office: Juliza Nieves, Governor; Olias Tierney, State Assemblyman; Genesis Boyer, Family Court Judge; and Shania Creighton, Sheriff. The Mock Election will be held in the next couple of months. Winners attend County Service Day where they will shadow the official to whose role they were elected. The State level leaders can also attend a trip to Albany later in the year. Ms. Austin and Mrs. Rilley couldn’t be more proud of the team!

Youth in Government (YIG) through Orange-Ulster BOCES (OUBOCES) is a program for high school students in Orange County, NY, that provides hands-on experience with the democratic and local government process. It is co-hosted with the Orange County Youth Bureau and involves activities like legislative simulations, mock elections, shadowing officials, and participating in a County Service Day. The goal is to educate students about local government and encourage civic participation.
