Superintendent’s Message to the Community

Yesterday we spoke with many of you who voiced your concerns regarding the way the District handled an email threat received over the weekend. I am writing to you to let you know that I hear your concerns, and I agree we could have done a much better job communicating about the situation. I can assure you future communication concerning threats, even when determined to be non-credible, will be as prompt as possible.

On Saturday, June 4th, we received a call that a threat was made via email to one of our schools. Over the weekend, we received information from several sources, including law enforcement, and based on that information I deemed the threat to be non-credible and felt there was no safety risk to students or staff. A message was sent out on Monday morning communicating this information. Additional steps were taken by law enforcement on Monday
morning to ensure student safety, but we acknowledge that we should have communicated this information to parents before their children arrived at school.

We are grateful for the assistance we received from the Village of Montgomery Police Department and the Town of Montgomery Police Department with whom we regularly consult on District-wide safety issues.

The safety and security of our students and staff are of the utmost concern to us. We are currently working with local law enforcement to put a plan together to increase security measures throughout the District. We believe this plan will assist in enhancing student safety in our schools. The plan
will be discussed at the upcoming Board of Education meeting.

You are correct that we could have done better, and I can assure you we will do so in the future.
