Summer Enrichment Opportunities 2023

Valley Central is very excited to offer summer enrichment opportunities for the third year. If your child is interested in any of the following workshops, please click on the link to sign up. If there are more applicants than we can accommodate, we will choose through a lottery system. We will notify all parents of students that have been chosen for workshops by May 1. Transportation is not provided. 

Music  

The elementary music camps for grades 2-4 will consist of a range of musical games and singing/playing activities. The instrumental sessions will allow students to develop their techniques in a low-stress environment. The vocal session will provide an opportunity for students to explore different singing styles and techniques. 

All music camps will run from 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.; Monday-Thursday. 
The maximum number of students per workshop is 25.

An Artist a Day

4 Different Artists + 4 Different Mediums = 4 Amazing Projects for children to walk away with at the end of the class. This will be a creative and explorative summer class for current middle school students to enjoy!

Family and Consumer Science

 Learn to Sew on a Sewing Machine

Students will learn how to sew on a sewing machine. They will design and construct a quilt, pillow cover, or quilt tote bag and sew it on a sewing machine. They will learn to calculate the size of the completed project to allow for seam allowance. If time allows, students will learn basic embroidery stitches to embellish their project.

 Summer PE Bonanza

Do you get the summer blues and miss playing your favorite PE games at school? Well, you are in luck!
Join us for one or all three of our sessions of PE fun, sun and excitement. Play games like kickball, basketball, tag, and more. Each day we will be playing something new! Activities will be both indoor and outdoor. Sign up today! Sessions run Monday – Thursday.

Purposeful Play

Purposeful Play for Current K-1 Students

Our young learners will be engaged in fun activities that will help them with social and communication skills. Students will engage in structured and unstructured play activities under the guidance of a teacher.

If your child attends Berea Elementary School or Montgomery Elementary School, the program will take place at Berea. If your child attends East Coldenham Elementary or Walden Elementary, the program will
take place at East Coldenham. You may sign up for all the weeks or select weeks. Please complete a separate form for each child you have in grades K-1 that you would like to attend.

World Languages (Elementary)

Beginning Spanish Enrichment

This course will focus on the Hispanic culture, language, music, art, crafts, and foods of the Spanish- speaking countries. The students will enjoy learning by utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. The emphasis of this course is to motivate students to want to further their education to learn a foreign
language. Basic Spanish will be taught using everyday conversation. Students will gain an understanding of people from different countries and cultures around the world.

Does your child like to spend time out in nature? Students will receive enrichment in science, nutrition, writing, researching, and designing through Garden-Based Learning. Upon completion, students will have participated in independent and collaborative hands-on projects.

Play, Write, and Imagine

Let us spend a week together as we use our imagination to make books. We will discover how painting, building, and playing make-believe together helps us create our stories. Students will need to bring a smock or old t-shirt for painting.

Elementary STEAM

Agriculture and Sustainability

This 4-day program will allow students to develop a sense of care for the planet and living things. Students will learn about life cycles as they hatch chicks. While learning to care for chicks at the different stages, students will use sustainable and Earth-friendly ways to meet their needs. Students will also
engage in coding, planning, and constructing take-home projects, while learning the value of recycling and using our natural resources. At the end of the week, students will appreciate nature and be inspired to recycle and conserve our resources.

Business

Sports & Entertainment Marketing Simulation for Current 8th-11th Graders

The Sports & Entertainment Marketing Simulation will introduce students to the basics of marketing while exploring how teams and organizations use the 4 P’s to enhance their overall brand. This is a project-based simulation where students will get to research current market trends and assess how to help
improve a current sports or media outlet of their choosing. Over the course of 4 days, students will redefine how a current team can improve its overall image and reach a new target audience. Some of the topics they will cover are budgeting, pricing, merchandising, sales, promotional campaigns, media relations, and venue enhancements. This will also serve as an extension of Valley Central High School’s business department and enable students to transition into a variety of college and career business courses through their guidance counselor.

Career Boot Camp for Current 8th-11th Graders

Career Boot camp is designed to help students prepare themselves for today’s professional workforce. This program will explore what career(s) fit a student’s skills and interests. Students will be introduced to the current aspects of college and career readiness courses while creating the necessary materials for employment. Students will leave the program with resumes, cover letters, and job interview skills that will help them succeed in the next phase of their lives. This will also serve as an extension of Valley Central High School’s business department and enable students to transition into a variety of college and career business courses through their guidance counselor.

Personal Financial Management for Current 8-11 Graders

This program will introduce students to the basic budgeting and banking skills necessary for them to manage their personal finances. This program will explore how students can create a personal budget, open bank accounts, manage their transactions, and evaluate interest rates on credit cards, student loans, and mortgages. This will also serve as an extension of Valley Central High School’s business department and enable students to transition into a variety of accounting and financial management courses through their guidance counselor.

Goal Setting

Mighty Minds for Current 8th-9th Grade Girls

Mighty Minds will prepare our female students to transition into high school by empowering them to create positive changes that include learning mindfulness strategies, building self-love, and cultivating healthy friendships. Participants will practice skills to create positive thinking patterns to support them in their transition to the next grade. Mindfulness, emotional skill building, and coping strategies will be taught to build self-esteem and manage stress. The program concludes with students outlining goals for the year and scaffolding their skills to support positive future thinking. Students will finish the week and leave with mindfulness glitter jars, vision boards that highlight their goals and posters of coping strategies.
