Walden Elementary Activities

Chess Club

Chess Club meets weekly to provide students the opportunity to play fun, recreational games, with the main focus being chess. This would help develop student confidence, problem solving, mental focus, logic and strategy. The main focus of the club would be on the game of chess, teaching the rules, vocabulary, history, and culture of the game.

Coding Club

Coding Club is an after school program where students in grades 4 and 5 learn the basics of computer programming in our computer lab. Over the course of the school year, students will code to create projects, and problem solve to find solutions to complex puzzles. The mission of Coding Club is not about learning how to become computer scientists, but to provide students the opportunity to explore what they can do with a computer. No previous
computer experience is necessary, as students collaborate and learn from one another.

Crazy 8’s

Students work collaboratively to apply their math and reasoning skills while working with different objects to solve a problem posed by the advisors.

Drama Club

Our Drama Club produces our yearly musical production.

Ecology Club

Members of the Walden’s Ecology Club have fun while learning about science
and finding practical ways to help our environment both locally and globally. This project-based club is geared toward the interests of the members of students in grades 4 and 5. Some projects have included addressing the Orange County Legislature with green laws, making trash receptacles for the Village of Walden and starting a recycling program at WES.

History Club

The award winning Walden Elementary History Club focuses on Walden’s
interesting local history. Students of all academic abilities in grades 4 and 5 will enjoy working with community leaders to examine local, state and national primary documents. In previous years, the club members have used these documents to produce video documentaries, written a historical Fiction about Walden’s factories and researched and portrayed Walden child
laborers from the 1800s.

Homework Club

Homework Club is a place for grade 4 and 5 students to work on their
homework, reading and other projects in a casual setting. Students can work collaboratively and quietly discuss their work. They are able to seek support from their peers and the teacher during this time.  This club typically runs for several months each year.

Student Council

The purpose of the Walden Elementary Student Council is to teach and
involve students in the democratic process by putting classroom learning into practice through elections of students into various positions in the Student Council Club. Student Council also fosters communication between students, parents, and teachers, and provides an opportunity for students to engage in public service through school-wide and community activities.

 Walden Math Club

Students in grades 3-5 can join the Walden Math Club.  The purpose of this club is to increase rigor and challenge students to foster a love of competitive math opportunities.  The Walden Math Club members are empowered by taking highly challenging math problems and solving them collaboratively.  In the past, the Walden Math Club has participated in online mathematics competitions with other elementary schools.

STEAM Enrichment Club

While participating in the STEAM Enrichment Club, 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to learn concepts that will prepare them for 21st century careers.  Using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math as tools to foster student learning, the Club focuses on expanding and sharpening students’ knowledge in algebra, numbers and operations, geometry, measurement, critical thinking, problem solving, design, and many more areas through fun activities and projects. STEAM Enrichment Club rotates to each elementary school throughout the year and is available for a limited time at each school.

The Yearbook Club produces our Yearbook.
